The locality is in Central Queensland region. Alligator Creek, a tributary of the Fitzroy River forms the western boundary of the locality. The town is in the centre of the locality.
Cammoo is a neighbourhood within the north of the locality (-23.1666°N, 150.45°W).
The Bruce Highway (locally also known as Yaamba Road) and the North Coast railway line traverse the locality from south (Etna Creek) to north-west (Milman), passing through the town, which is served by The Caves railway station (-23.1807°N, 150.4614°W) while Cammoo railway station further north in the locality (-23.1669°N, 150.4519°W) is now abandoned.
The Mount Etna Caves National Park (-23.1575°N, 150.4822°W) protects the limestone caves area in the north of the locality and its colonies of ghost bats:
Olsens Caves in the east of the locality (-23.165°N, 150.4905°W) is outside the national park.

The ancestors of Aboriginal Australians began arriving from south east Asia approximately 65,000 years ago, during the last ice age. Arriving by sea, they settled the continent and had formed approximately 250 distinct language groups by the time of European settlement, maintaining some of the longest known continuing artistic and religious traditions in the world. The European population grew in subsequent decades, and by the end of the 1850s gold rush, most of the continent had been explored by European settlers and an additional five self-governing British colonies established. Democratic parliaments were gradually established through the 19th century, culminating with a vote for the federation of the six colonies and foundation of the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901. Australia has since maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and wealthy market economy.
